New Year’s Resolutions: Stay Organized in 2014

(by Jay Garner of the Smith Conley team)

As we all get ready to set our New Year’s resolutions, we should all take a moment to look back over the current year and try to identify the single biggest time waster that prevented you and/or your business from accomplishing some of your prioritized goals for 2013.

 OneNote List

For me, the biggest time waster, specifically with all of the tax law changes this year, was searching through the volumes of information I have read or amassed on my desk for a particular key point or item of interest that I can share with a client or business partner.

If only there was a way to quickly grab those tidbits of information and be able to easily organize them into a cohesive and centrally accessible location for quick retrieval! Someone should develop a computer program that does just that…….

Well, Microsoft has developed a very robust computer program that has become standard on most new computers.  This amazing program is called OneNote, and it is compatible with all Microsoft products (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.).

OneNote is a digital notebook that allows you to record virtually any kind of data (hand-written notes, typed text, screen-clippings, audio and even print-to-file documents).  And now, with the mobile application explosion, you can capture your notes either at your desktop ,on your tablet or smartphone and then access your notes from anywhere.  You can even share a file so that a group of people can collaborate on a single notebook!

 OneNote overview

Whether you are documenting meeting notes, talking points, procedural manuals, checklists or performing in depth research on a topic, OneNote can help you to maintain a paperless environment and allow you access to your work from anywhere.

For instance, if you are researching a client’s file the day before meeting with them for lunch and you note several important talking points, (without getting too bogged down in the details), then you could quickly do screenshots of the important items into a OneNote page for that client.  Then while you are waiting for your food to arrive, you can pull up the talking points on your smartphone and begin going through the items you might have otherwise forgotten.

Imagine having this to refer to instead of some scribbled notes from your office scratchpad. In addition, you could share this chart with other smartphone, tablet, or laptop users in the room!

OneNote map use In order to see if your Windows computer has this program, go to: Start/All Programs/Microsoft Office/OneNote.

Once you’ve completed some setup steps, then download the OneNote app for your smart phone, and you are ready for organization beyond your wildest dreams……

 BRING IT ON 2014!
